My name is Erma Hermens. I am a technical art historian and work since April 2016 for the Rijksmuseum. I am based in the Ateliergebouw , or Studio Building. I focus on researching the making of art and everything connected to that act. My field is technical art history where research methodologies of the arts and humanities, sciences, conservation but also anthropology , history of science, and other disciplines are combined in an interdisciplinary, holistic object-based research approach of artworks. In this blog, together with my colleagues, I will tell you more about everything that is happening in the Ateliergebouw: about the research into the processes and materials artists and artisans used, and about the research supporting the many complex conservation treatments that take place here.
